Eurozone Youth Unemployment Reaches Alarming Levels
Young people in the eurozone are facing significant challenges in entering the labor market, according to an analysis by the European Central Bank (ECB). Despite a relatively stable overall unemployment rate of 6.3% in the first quarter of 2026, youth unemployment has risen to 15.1%. This disparity is attributed to the slowdown in employment that began in 2023.
The ICT sector has been disproportionately affected, with a decline of 18.6% in youth employment between the first quarters of 2023 and 2026. The ECB suggests that this downturn cannot be explained solely by economic cycles, but also points to deeper structural changes within the industry.
Unemployed young people with higher education are increasingly less optimistic about job prospects, citing a lack of suitable positions matching their qualifications as the primary concern. In contrast, those with lower education have somewhat more positive expectations.
