Fed Considers October Rate Hike Amid Rising Inflation Pressures
Michael Barr, a Federal Reserve Governor, has stated that further policy adjustments are likely to be needed to ensure inflation comes down to target in a timely fashion. This comment came after last week's quarter percentage point increase and follows remarks prepared for a housing conference in Chicago.
In his base case, Barr thinks policymakers still have more work to do. He emphasized the importance of price stability in achieving sustainable, durable growth in support of maximum employment. The Federal Reserve's dual mandate includes both maximum employment and price stability.
The comments come as fresh economic readings show intensifying inflation pressures. S&P Global reported that its flash gauges on both the manufacturing and services industries hit their highest levels in more than four years. The services index rose to 58.7, while the manufacturing index jumped to 56.7. Any reading over 50 represents growth.
Along with this came price pressures: S&P Global's overall inflation measure hit its highest level since October 2022, due to higher fuel and transportation costs as well as rising wages. Firms' input costs have increased at the steepest rate for four years.
