Fed Credibility Under Fire Amid Inflation Concerns and Interest Rate Debate
The Federal Reserve's credibility is being tested on multiple fronts, from short-term interest rates to long-term bond yields. In an interview, Global Head of Fixed Income Research Andrew Sheets discussed inflation, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's outlook, and the options ahead.
Warsh has been in close contact with President Trump, who sees him as a valued outside economic adviser. Their conversations have sparked scrutiny on the independent central bank. The relationship between the two is similar to that of Clinton-Greenspan during their time in office.
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook said she's ready to support an interest rate hike unless inflation numbers improve, stating 'inflation is too high, and I consider the risks to the inflation side of the dual mandate higher than the risks to the employment side at this point.'
SF Fed President Mary Daly also weighed in on the situation, saying that the central bank should be ready to intervene if inflation worsens. She outlined a bimodal outlook, with scenario one remaining her base case but scenario two gaining ground.
