Fed Downplays Urgency to Raise Interest Rates Amid Economic Uncertainty
The US Federal Reserve has downplayed the urgency to raise interest rates amid economic uncertainty. New York Federal Reserve President John Williams stated that there is no need for immediate action, but a further increase may be necessary by the end of this year.
Williams emphasized that the policy decision made earlier this month was sufficient and that more time is needed to gather information on the economy's evolution.
The Fed raised interest rates by 25 basis points in September, taking it to a range between 3.75-4.00% to combat high inflation.
Williams also hinted at a potential further increase later this year if the economy continues to evolve as predicted, with one upward adjustment of the federal funds target range being considered to support a return to the 2% inflation target.
