Fed Faces Rate Hike Dilemma Amid Inflation Concerns

The US Federal Reserve is set to meet this week, and financial markets are expecting policymakers to raise interest rates to combat persistent inflation. The economy has faced years of inflation above the Fed's long-term target, with prices pushed higher by energy shocks linked to President Trump's war on Iran and his tariff policies.

New consumer inflation data released Friday showed prices rising 3.4 percent in August, unchanged from the previous month but still significantly above the Fed's 2 percent long-term target. Following the data, expectations for a 25-basis-point rate increase at Wednesday's meeting rose sharply, with markets putting the probability of a rate hike at more than 85 percent.

New Fed Chair Kevin Warsh faces his first major test as he decides whether to raise rates to combat inflation or keep them unchanged in line with the White House's preference. If he chooses to raise rates, it would be the Fed's third increase since battling inflation that surged following the COVID-19 pandemic.
