Fed Flags Positive Outlook Amidst Heightened Uncertainty

The U.S. Federal Reserve has released its latest 'beige book' survey of economic conditions, indicating that while the country's general economic outlook is positive, heightened uncertainty due to high energy prices, policy issues, and the Iran war is weighing on industry and household sentiment.

The Fed reported that economic activity nationwide increased 'modestly' since early July, with consumer spending also growing slightly. However, high inflation has resulted in a great deal of price sensitivity for consumers in general, but with high-end purchases still showing solid numbers.

This finding is consistent with the trend economists have dubbed the 'K-shaped' economy: lower-income households reducing spending while higher-income household consumption grows.

The report comes ahead of a meeting of the Fed's rate-setting committee in mid-September, where markets expect the central bank to raise interest rates to combat sustained inflation.
