Fed Hike Decision Sparks Concern Over Inflation Insurance
The market is expecting a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve (Fed) hike today, but the real question on everyone's mind is what the dot plot will signal for future tightening. Strong growth in the US justifies the hike, but 10-year yields above 5% indicate that the bond market is buckling under fiscal deficits and energy shocks.
The Canadian dollar (CAD) has a massive 175-basis-point rate disadvantage compared to the US, and the reliance on oil prices to support it is no longer reliable. Mexico's yield premium offers little defense against rising energy costs and a spiking VIX, making emerging market carry trades a pain trade.
The Fed's decision will determine whether markets view further tightening as inflation insurance or a policy mistake. A hawkish dot plot that preserves additional 2026 hikes will lift front-end yields, reinforce dollar strength, and press risk assets.
