Fed Holds Steady as Economy Rides Energy Price Volatility
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) maintained interest rates at 3.5-3.75% in its latest vote, a move welcomed by businesses amid market uncertainty driven by soaring energy and food prices.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh stated that keeping the benchmark rate steady was appropriate given the current state of the US economy, despite significant risks stemming from the conflict with Iran and continued volatility in energy prices.
The FOMC voted 9-3 to keep interest rates on hold, with three regional Fed Bank presidents - Beth Hammack of Cleveland, Neel Kashkari of Minneapolis, and Lorie Logan of Dallas - voting against maintaining the status quo.
These officials have consistently argued in favor of raising interest rates to curb inflation, which has hovered between 3.5% and 3.7%, well above the Fed's 2% target.
