Fed Keeps Interest Rates Steady Amid Oil Price Spike
The US Federal Reserve decided to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at a meeting on Wednesday. The decision was made despite a renewed spike in oil prices due to the intensifying war in the Middle East, which has added upward pressure on prices.
At the two-day monetary policy meeting, the Fed's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted 9-3 to maintain the federal funds rate within the range of 3.50-3.75 percent, where it has remained since December. The dissenting votes were from three members who favored a 0.25 percentage point hike.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh emphasized the importance of debate among committee members and said that there is no 'magic wand' to bring inflation down to the central bank's 2 percent target. He stated that restoring price stability will take time, but the Fed will deliver on its responsibility to Congress.
