Fed Maintains Control Over Interest Rates, Liquidity
New York Fed official Roberto Perli has assured that the Federal Reserve maintains effective control over short-term interest rates and sufficient reserves. He made these comments at a recent event focused on issues affecting the Treasury market.
According to Perli, the central bank has maintained strong control over interest rates while Treasury bill purchases have proceeded smoothly. The New York Fed has been using Reserve Management Purchases (RMPs) of Treasury bills to help maintain appropriate levels of reserves and ensure effective control over the federal funds rate.
Perli noted that the scale of future RMPs will be adjusted according to market liquidity conditions, ensuring that the financial system remains sufficiently liquid. He added that the central bank's reserve forecasting process is generally accurate, with forecasting errors representing only a small portion of total reserves.
