Fed Meeting: Market Expectations Peak as Rate Hike Looms Large

The Federal Reserve's upcoming interest-rate meeting has market expectations running at full throttle. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, and the FOMC policy statement will be released at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, followed by a press conference at 2:30 p.m.

A rate hike is all but certain, with market pricing putting the probability of a 25-basis-point increase at 90%. The Fed has no choice but to raise rates, given last Friday's CPI reading, which came in higher than expected. The situation is tricky, as any misstep in the press conference could lead to a sharp spike in Treasury yields and doubts about the Fed's credibility.

The market has already fully priced in a complete rate-hike cycle, expecting two more hikes this year and two more in 2027. The press conference will be crucial, as it is where the Fed will address market expectations. If comments lean dovish relative to market pricing, long-dated Treasuries could come under heavy selling pressure, weakening the dollar.
