Fed Minutes and Corporate Earnings in Spotlight for Market-Moving Week
The upcoming week (October 5 to October 9) will see the Federal Reserve's policy path remain the central focus of market trading. Key economic data releases include the September ISM Services Index, August trade balance, consumer credit, initial jobless claims, and the preliminary October University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index. The Fed's September FOMC meeting minutes, set for release on Wednesday, will provide crucial insights into whether further interest rate hikes are expected in October.
At its September 16 meeting, the Fed raised interest rates by 25 basis points, bringing the target range for the federal funds rate to 3.75%-4.00%. Economic projections suggest the median FOMC forecast for the federal funds rate at the end of 2026 is 4.1%, indicating potential for further rate hikes.
On the corporate front, several notable companies will report earnings, including Constellation Brands (STZ), Levi Strauss (LEVI), PepsiCo (PEP), and Delta Air Lines (DAL). These reports will offer insights into U.S. consumer behavior in sectors like alcohol, apparel, food and beverage, and air travel.
The September ISM Services PMI, to be released on Monday, will highlight the business activity and new orders indices, with particular attention to the employment and prices paid sub-indices. The August data showed robust demand but weak employment and elevated price pressures.
PepsiCo's third-quarter earnings, due on Thursday, will focus on volume trends, pricing power, and profit margins in North America. Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines' earnings on Friday will scrutinize travel demand and the impact of high oil prices on margins.
