Fed Officials Hint at More Interest Rate Hikes
The Federal Reserve's recent interest rate hike may not be an isolated event. At least five Fed officials have spoken publicly since last week's landmark decision, and none of them suggested that the central bank will stop at one increase.
According to prepared remarks from these officials, the Fed still has work to do to push inflation down to its target of a 2% annual rate of increase. Several policymakers expressed concerns that the fuel price increases from the Iran war and tariffs could set off broader inflation, necessitating further rate hikes.
Anna Paulson, president of the Philadelphia Fed, said that if conditions evolve as she expects, 'some modest further tightening may be warranted.'
John C. Williams, president of the New York Fed, echoed this sentiment, stating that 'it's likely that another rate hike may be appropriate by the end of the year.'
