Fed Official's Sordid Romance with Alleged Spy Lands Him Behind Bars

A former senior Federal Reserve official was convicted of making false statements to investigators and sentenced to 38 months in federal prison. John Harold Rogers, a longtime economist, had met his second wife, Yu Liu, on AsianDating.com, an online dating site.

Rogers' connection to China deepened after he met Hummin Lee at a 2013 Shanghai conference sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Lee was later identified as Chinese intelligence operative Jin Chuan by the FBI.

Lee gradually became entwined in Rogers' life, sending gifts and helping him pursue a relationship with Yu Liu. The romance moved quickly, with Lee organizing trips for the couple to spend time together.

Rogers proposed to Yu Liu during his second visit, but she was still married at the time. Lee reportedly helped arrange her divorce by sending photos of a newly issued certificate to Rogers, who later told investigators that he owed everything to him.
