Fed Officials Weigh Another Rate Hike Amid Inflation Risks

The Federal Reserve is facing growing pressure to increase interest rates as officials weigh renewed inflation risks from the Middle East conflict and other factors. The mounting uncertainty has exposed a divide within the central bank, with some officials arguing that the Fed may need to resume raising rates rather than waiting for inflation to cool.

Three regional bank presidents dissented in favor of an increase at the July meeting, which was the first time in 10 years that three officials dissented in the same direction. Half of the Federal Open Markets Committee projected a rate increase would be necessary later this year, while nine others projected no additional increases.

Several Fed officials have warned in speeches and appearances that they may be forced to raise rates if inflation doesn’t show sustained signs of slowing. Dallas Fed president Lorie Logan already called for increasing rates in a mid-July speech, citing unduly high inflation that 'isn’t coming from only one source, it’s broad based.'

Warsh renewed his commitment to restoring price stability after more than half a decade of above-target inflation but delayed action for at least another eight weeks. Recent inflation data offered some encouragement, with the Fed's preferred inflation index showing a slowdown in prices for June, falling to 3.7% from 4.1%. However, the decline was mostly driven by a drop in energy prices.

The confluence of inflationary pressures appears to be testing the patience of officials who have argued that the Fed may need to resume raising rates even as Warsh has been hesitant to say whether hikes may be necessary. Markets have priced the odds of a quarter-point increase during the September meeting at more than 60%.
