Fed Plans Bank Oversight Threshold Hike
The US Federal Reserve is preparing to adjust bank oversight thresholds, potentially easing regulatory burdens on regional lenders. The changes could give banks like US Bancorp and Capital One more room to grow without facing stricter requirements.
The current thresholds were set in 2019, but have not kept pace with economic growth since then. Banks with assets over $100 billion face significant costs for compliance specialists, risk management systems, stress testing, and reporting, which can reach tens of millions of dollars a year.
The proposed changes would raise the highest threshold to around $1 trillion and move some requirements closer to the $150 billion mark. This could encourage mergers among midsize banks that have been hesitant to pursue deals due to regulatory concerns.
