Fed Policymakers Back Rate Hikes as Inflation Concerns Mount
The Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes show that many policymakers believe interest rate hikes will be necessary if inflation doesn't decline. Three out of 12 voting members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) dissented from the majority decision to hold rates steady last month, calling for an immediate 25-basis-point hike.
The minutes also reveal that some participants saw the effect of the AI boom on prices as limited, while others believed it was already having 'broader effects'.
Regional Fed presidents Beth Hammack, Lorie Logan, and Neel Kashkari all favored raising interest rates immediately to address high inflation and meet the Committee's commitment to its dual mandate on inflation and maximum employment.
