Fed Ponders Rate Hike If Inflation Fails to Budge
Financial markets are bracing for an interest rate hike as Federal Reserve policymakers see it as 'necessary' if inflation doesn't ease soon. The Fed's Open Market Committee meeting minutes, released on Wednesday, show that many participants believe policy tightening will be necessary to combat inflation.
The majority of the 12-member panel voted to leave rates unchanged at a top range of 3.75%, where they have remained since January. However, some members, including Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan, advocated for raising rates to forestall a steeper and potentially more costly sequence of tightening moves.
Chief among them is Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, who voted to raise rates at the last meeting. He believes that doing so would likely help prevent the need for further rate hikes in the future.
