Fed Prepares for Another Interest Rate Hike This Year
Natixis economists Christopher Hodge and Selin Aker have analyzed the Federal Reserve's latest policy decision, concluding that one more interest rate hike is expected within the year. In their report, they stated that the recent rate hike does not necessarily mark the end of this tightening cycle.
The implemented rate hike was described as a 'path of least resistance' by Hodge and Aker, with limited substantive effect on cooling inflation. They noted that maintaining rates unchanged would further damage the Fed's policy credibility, while a one-time 50 basis point hike would be too aggressive.
The economists highlighted that while this rate hike is unlikely to fundamentally resolve inflation issues, it buys the FOMC time to observe whether August's higher-than-expected inflation data represents merely short-term volatility or signals deeper underlying risks of resurgent inflation.
