Fed Raises Key Interest Rate Amid High Inflation
The US Federal Reserve has raised its key interest rate for the first time since summer 2023, increasing it by a quarter point to a range of 3.75-4%. This decision was made in response to high inflation and rising energy prices.
The Fed noted that economic activity in the US continues to expand at a steady pace, with domestic spending remaining resilient, productivity growth strong, and capital investment substantial.
However, the central bank stated that inflation remains elevated, with the unemployment rate largely unchanged. To combat this, the decision was made to raise interest rates, which should help bring inflation back to the 2% target more quickly.
