Fed Raises Key Rate Amid Inflation Concerns
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh announced an interest rate hike on September 16, 2026. The increase was the first in three years and raised the key rate to a range of 3.75% to 4%. This move is aimed at tackling 'stubbornly-high inflation', according to The Associated Press.
The Federal Open Market Committee, comprising all 12 members, supported this decision. Despite President Donald Trump's preference for a rate cut, the Fed officials believe the economy is growing 'at a solid pace' with 'strong productivity growth'. They also foresee another increase later in 2026, bringing the key rate to 4.1%.
The hike will likely result in higher borrowing costs for consumers. The Associated Press noted that the increased interest rate of around 3.9% could mean higher prices for mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards.
