Fed Raises Rates Amid Global Inflation Pressures
The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates for the first time since 2023 by a quarter of a percentage point, in response to high inflation. However, oil prices have surged past $100 a barrel and diesel has exceeded $6 a gallon in some areas. The Fed's move is unlikely to address the root causes of this inflation, which is largely driven by global events such as the Hormuz blockade.
The US experienced high inflation after the COVID-19 pandemic, with rates topping out at over 9% in 2022 when the Fed's interest rates were near zero for two years. This time around, the causes of inflation are different and higher interest rates may not provide relief to American families struggling with rising fuel costs.
