Fed Raises Rates Amid Trump Policy Blame
The Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2023 on Wednesday. The decision was unanimous among voting members, citing stubbornly high inflation that has persisted for over five years.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, nominated by Donald Trump earlier this year, downplayed concerns about the move but made subtle hints about the president's policies contributing to the rise in prices. He used code words like 'geopolitics,' 'hot spots around the world,' and 'commodity prices' that implied a connection between Trump's tariffs and war with Iran to higher costs.
The Iran conflict has pushed up gas prices by disrupting key oil transit points, while Trump's trade war has increased the cost of many imported goods. Inflation had been falling under Joe Biden's presidency but surged when Trump took over. Warsh argued that other factors, such as strong consumer spending, weren't helping matters.
