Fed Raises Rates to Tackle Persistent Inflation

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point on September 19, 2026, in an effort to combat persistent inflation. The central bank's decision marks its first rate hike of the year as policymakers move to slow price increases across the US economy.

Central bank officials face a dual mandate: maintaining price stability and fostering maximum employment. While economic conditions occasionally allow both goals to align smoothly, accelerating inflation has forced policymakers to prioritize controlling living costs even as the broader labor market remains steady.

The rate hike is expected to raise borrowing costs across the economy, increasing expenses for consumer loans, credit cards, and mortgages. According to data released by Freddie Mac, the average rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose to 6.95 percent, adding hundreds of dollars to monthly home loan payments.

Central bank officials expressed concern that price growth has consistently exceeded their 2 percent target for five consecutive years without showing adequate signs of cooling down on its own. 'The plain fact is that inflation is too high and has been for too long,' said Kevin Warsh, Chair of the Federal Reserve.
