Fed Rate Hike Hits Student Loan Borrowers
The Federal Reserve raised short-term interest rates for the first time since 2023 on September 16, aiming to bring inflation down to 2%. This decision impacts consumers with variable interest rate loans, including those taking out student loans.
For students at Florida State University, this means that those holding private student loans with variable interest rates may face increased borrowing costs. However, federal student loan borrowers do not need to worry as their interest rates remain fixed for the life of the loan.
According to Joseph Calhoun, Director of the Stavros Center for Economic Education at FSU, students should know what type of loans they have and understand how their interest rates work. He advises students to estimate their monthly payments before accepting a loan.
The Fed's rate hikes may lead to an economic slowdown, which could cause future Treasury yields to drop, potentially resulting in lower federal loan rates next academic year.
