Fed Rate Hike Looms: One-Off Move or Fresh Tightening Cycle?

Investors are eagerly awaiting the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on Thursday, where a 25-basis-point rate increase appears all but certain. The odds of such a move have risen to 92 percent, sparking debate about whether it will be a one-off decision or the start of a fresh tightening cycle.

Some analysts believe that a single rate hike could be seen as dovish, potentially boosting equities, by restoring the Fed's credibility and demonstrating its commitment to reining in inflation. However, others warn that if the Fed signals further increases are on the horizon, stocks may face significant challenges due to stretched valuations and a prolonged oil crisis.

Stephen Innes, a managing partner at SPI Asset Management, noted that a one-and-done outcome would 'allow the Fed to show that it is responding to inflation, respecting the message from markets and acting independently despite political pressure.' He added that such an action would also remove some of the uncertainty surrounding future meetings.
