Fed Shifts Focus from Rate Hikes to Timing Amid Stubborn Inflation
The Federal Reserve is shifting its focus from whether to raise interest rates again to when it should happen, according to recent data releases and statements from officials.
Inflation remained steady at 3.4% year-over-year in August, while the economy grew at a healthy 2.2% pace in the second quarter, driven by strong consumer spending and business investment.
The stubborn inflation and consistent growth have led economists to anticipate another rate increase before the end of the year, possibly as soon as next month. Fed officials are weighing the need for continued rate hikes to combat inflation against the potential impact on economic growth and employment.
Fed governor Michael Barr emphasized the importance of bringing down inflation to target in a timely fashion, stating 'In my base case, further policy adjustments are likely to be needed to ensure inflation comes down to target in a timely fashion.'
While officials have pointed to a mostly healthy economy and labor market that can withstand higher rates, there is growing consensus within the Fed for the need for continued rate hikes.
