Fed Shifts Focus to Timing of Next Rate Hike Amid Persistent Inflation
The Federal Reserve is shifting its focus from whether to raise interest rates again to when it should do so, as stubborn inflation and steady economic growth continue.
Inflation remained elevated in August at 3.4% compared to a year ago, above the Fed's target of 2%. However, consumer spending rose 0.9% in August, with an increase in spending on goods and services despite higher fuel costs.
Economists and investors widely anticipate another rate hike before the end of the year, possibly as soon as next month. Federal Reserve officials are focused on bringing inflation down and have indicated that they need to prioritize price stability amid an energy shock from the war with Iran.
Fed Governor Michael Barr stated that more increases will likely be needed to ensure inflation comes down to target in a timely fashion, while Fed Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized the importance of removing 'a dose of accommodation' from the economy.
