Fed Silence Redirects Market Focus

Central bankers are often wrong and forecasts are revised, but reducing official communication at the Federal Reserve does not eliminate market focus on policy information. Instead, it redirects attention to private signals and informal conversations.

This shift in transparency began with Marvin Goodfriend and David Dotsey's work in the 1980s, which challenged the 'monetary mystique' that secrecy enhanced monetary policy. Their research showed that opacity increased uncertainty by making policy harder to anticipate.

Investors who once scrutinized public statements will instead focus on perceived access to policymakers. The demand for information about monetary policy remains unchanged, but only the supply of public information declines.
