Fed to Finalize Overhaul of Bank Stress Test Process
The Federal Reserve is set to finalize an overhaul of its bank stress test process, aimed at making it more transparent and predictable for lenders. Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman announced that the central bank will vote on a final version of the revamped exam in the coming weeks.
Banks have long complained about the opacity and unpredictability of the Fed's stress tests, which are used to set additional capital requirements for large lenders. The industry has challenged the use of these tests in court, with some banks even suing the Fed in 2024.
The new version of the test will provide more details on the models used to probe banks for weaknesses, including technical equations and variables that were previously kept secret. It will also give more information about the hypothetical economic scenarios created each year for the test.
