Fed Watchdog Warns of Security Vulnerabilities Amid Data Breach Concerns
The Federal Reserve's watchdog has identified 'breakdowns and deficiencies' in security at the US central bank. The Office of Inspector General flagged potential breaches by an unnamed employee in the international finance division, resulting in 279 'data loss prevention' alerts between July 2023 and July 2024.
The alerts included 111 incidents potentially involving information related to the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee and 40 that may have contained central bank material. The watchdog warned of 'information security risks and control breakdowns and deficiencies' requiring immediate attention from the Fed's board.
The Fed has agreed to implement tighter security procedures, but there was insufficient basis for a misconduct investigation into the matter. The incident highlights concerns about the security of the Fed due to its high-value proprietary financial information.
