Federal Reserve Finalizes Revised Bank Stress Testing System
The Federal Reserve is set to finalize its revised bank stress testing system in the coming weeks. The updated approach aims to make examinations more transparent and capital requirements more predictable for large banks.
Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman said that the regulator will vote on the final version of the new assessment system soon, which will bring an end to a 'system that is opaque and unreasonably unpredictable.'
The current stress testing system has been criticized by banks for being overly subjective and burdensome. The industry even filed a lawsuit against the Fed in 2024 over its use of the system.
The new procedure will provide more information about the models used to assess bank vulnerabilities, including disclosing some equations, variables, and technical parameters that were previously kept private.
