Federal Reserve Governor Touts AI, Stablecoins as Future of Payments
At Sibos 2025 in Frankfurt, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller advocated for the use of artificial intelligence (AI), distributed ledger technology (DLT), and tokenization to modernize payment systems. In his speech titled 'The Next Frontier of Payments Innovation,' Waller emphasized the potential of AI to automate compliance processes in international transfers.
Waller praised agentic AI, which can execute tasks autonomously, for handling tasks like sanctions screening, fraud detection, and regulatory checks without human intervention. He also highlighted the benefits of DLT and tokenization in making payment rails faster and more transparent.
The Federal Reserve governor explicitly mentioned stablecoins as part of this technological toolkit, stating there is 'no need to fear new technologies or payment providers.' This endorsement lends institutional credibility to the sector, which has been seeking regulatory legitimacy. The interoperability challenge Waller highlighted creates opportunities for middleware providers that build bridges between traditional banking infrastructure and tokenized systems.
