Federal Reserve Hikes Interest Rates Amid Ongoing Inflation Concerns
The Federal Reserve has raised its benchmark interest rate for the first time in three years. The federal-funds rate has been lifted to a range of 3.75% to 4%, with officials expecting at least one further increase before the end of the year.
The decision was made to combat inflation, which remains above the central bank's target. The Federal Reserve cited heightened uncertainty and geopolitical risks, including the ongoing war in Iran, as factors contributing to rising energy costs.
Former Federal Reserve Bank of New York President William Dudley stated that the principal change in the outlook had been the renewed increase in energy prices, which are comparable to those associated with oil priced at about $200 a barrel.
