Federal Reserve Hikes Rates Amid Persistent Inflation Concerns

The Federal Reserve increased its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point for the first time in three years. This move was made to combat inflation, which remains above the central bank's 2% target. The new target range is now between 3.75% and 4%. While this change won't directly affect the interest rates on consumer loans, it can influence borrowing costs across the economy.

Borrowers taking out new auto or personal loans may feel the effects of this rate increase most directly. Brad Hershbein, a senior economist at the Upjohn Institute, noted that as long as interest rates remain elevated, they will continue to impact borrowing costs. For example, a $30,000 five-year loan would have a monthly payment of about $566 at 5% interest and $608 at 8%, resulting in roughly $2,500 more in interest over the life of the loan.

However, this rate increase won't directly affect what consumers pay for groceries or gasoline. Those prices are influenced by supply and demand, energy markets, and global events. Locals in Kalamazoo, Michigan, said they're being cautious with their spending due to higher everyday costs. Hershbein also mentioned that wages have not kept pace with inflation, which is another factor affecting households.
