Federal Reserve Paper Sparks Speculation on BFT Consensus and XRP Adoption
The Federal Reserve system recently published a discussion paper titled 'Heraclius: A Byzantine Fault Tolerant Database System with Potential for Modern Payments Systems.'
The study explores Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus as an ideal architecture for secure, high-speed financial infrastructure, noting that a BFT-based system can theoretically achieve processing speeds of up to 110,000 transactions per second.
Crypto analysts have linked the paper's findings to digital assets like XRP and XLM, which use a Federated Byzantine Agreement, a variant of traditional BFT consensus model. This has led some to speculate that the Federal Reserve is indirectly validating these networks for institutional settlement use cases.
However, it's essential to note that the Federal Reserve's FedNow service does not use or require XRP. The paper does not contain any official policy or operational framework indicating that the Federal Reserve plans to adopt or integrate private cryptocurrencies like XRP into its monetary or payment systems.
