Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates Amid Concerns Over Consumer Impact
Financial markets were abuzz recently as the Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, sparking concerns about its impact on consumers and the broader economy.
Tyler Schipper, an associate professor of economics at the University of St. Thomas, acknowledged that the quarter-point increase may be 'a bitter pill' for those who rely on credit to make purchases, but emphasized that it's a necessary measure to slow down demand and keep prices in check.
'It is going to cause more short-term pain for people wanting to borrow money,' Schipper explained, particularly for lower-income individuals who have put money on their credit cards.
However, he argued that the move could ultimately lead to higher wages as inflation is brought under control. 'We're growing faster than inflation, so people's real incomes actually start being positive again,' Schipper noted.
