Federal Reserve's Tight Monetary Policy Under Fire from Noted Economist

Economist James E. Thorne has criticized the Federal Reserve's recent monetary policy moves, stating that they are 'on the wrong track'. Thorne argues that interest rate increases may be insufficient to address the root causes of current price pressures.

The economist claims that high inflation is not solely caused by strong consumer demand but also by factors such as energy costs, housing shortages, production cuts, and other supply constraints. As a result, further interest rate hikes could weaken the economy's productive capacity rather than reducing inflation.

Thorne specifically drew attention to the decline in quarterly full-time employment data, which he believes is not just a statistical anomaly but a sign of the structural transformation the economy is undergoing. He also pointed out that the housing sector is directly feeling the pressure of tight monetary policy rather than creating inflation.

The economist suggests that recent economic growth can be attributed to the initial results of the Trump administration's supply-side economic policies and a long-term investment cycle, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, data center and computing capacity, electricity generation, and infrastructure. Thorne warned that further interest rate increases could make it more difficult to finance productive investments, hindering future expansion of supply capacity.
