Fed's Economic Data at Risk as Task Force Examines Reliability
Kevin Warsh, the Federal Reserve's Vice Chairman of Economic Policy, has formed a task force to examine the state of economic data in the US. This comes after a temporary outage last month of the Fed's system for monitoring banks.
The issue is that the data used by the Fed is at risk of disappearing, and this could lead to relying on private companies to provide the necessary information.
Economist Kathryn Anne Edwards expressed concerns about putting economic data in the hands of private companies. She stated that while private data can be more accurate, it doesn't give a comprehensive look at the broader economy.
Edwards emphasized that without the bigger picture, smaller parts of the economy can get lost, and this affects marginalized communities first. She highlighted that the unemployment rate is just one data point among many others, and these other metrics are crucial for understanding how Americans are experiencing the economy.
