Fed's Fine-Tuning Rate Hike: A Lone Shot or Package Deal?

The US Federal Reserve raised its policy rate for the first time since 2023, sparking debate about whether multiple rate hikes are in store. The median participant in a Fed survey thought another rate hike would occur by the end of 2026, but policymakers acknowledged heightened uncertainty around their inflation forecasts.

A notable exception to the rule that rate hikes come in packages is Alan Greenspan's solo rate move in March 1997. In that case, the economy was strong and unemployment had fallen sharply, leading policymakers to wonder if it was at risk of overheating. The Fed's internal models forecast a modest increase in core consumer prices due to labor market tightness.

Kevin Warsh now finds himself adjusting to potential technological jolts from artificial intelligence that could drive up productivity and growth. Greenspan was contending with the start of the internet revolution when he made his move. The Fed's internal survey also signaled that policymakers may take their time bringing rates back down from the peak.

The actions taken by the Fed on Wednesday buttress its credibility, according to some experts. Warsh began his tenure with questions swirling about his independence, and a failure to act would have looked like he was cowed by President Donald Trump ahead of midterm elections in November.
