Fed's Hammack Warns of Inflationary Mindset Risk
Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland President Beth Hammack expressed concerns about the potential for inflation expectations to deteriorate, which could lead to elevated prices becoming the norm. She stated that the biggest risk with current inflation is an 'inflationary mindset' setting in, given that prices have been above target for over five years.
Hammack emphasized the need for monetary policy to be at a restrictive stance to bring inflation back down to target. The Fed has already raised interest rates earlier this month, and officials are pencilling in another increase before year-end, although market participants expect more than that.
The personal consumption expenditures price index was up 3.7% in July versus a year ago, above the Fed's 2.0% target. Hammack attributed high inflation not only to shocks like trade tariffs and energy impacts but also to robust demand tied to the solid performance of the economy and job market stability.
