Fed's HQ Renovation Project Hits Snag as GSA Takes Over
The Federal Reserve's costly headquarters renovation project has hit a roadblock, with Chairman Kevin Warsh bringing in the General Services Administration (GSA) to manage its completion. The project, initially estimated to cost $1.317 billion and be finished by the second quarter of 2024, now has a price tag of $2.381 billion and an expected completion date of the end of 2027.
A report from the Fed's Office of Inspector General found that while there was no administrative misconduct in the project's management, mistakes were made that contributed to significant cost overruns and delays. Inflation and unanticipated project needs led to these increases, as well as lapses in project management and contracting practices.
The GSA will now serve as the project executive for the renovation, reporting directly to Warsh. The Fed Chair has expressed confidence in GSA Administrator Edward Forst's expertise, which includes private sector experience with large-scale construction projects.
