Fed's Patience on Interest Rates Reflects Data-Driven Approach
Philip Jefferson, Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve (Fed), stated that the Fed is fully committed to returning inflation to its target rate of 2%. He emphasized that future interest rate decisions should be data-driven and not rushed.
Jefferson's comments echo those made by New York Fed President John Williams on Wednesday, who said that the Fed is in no hurry to tighten monetary policy. The Vice Chairman added that the Fed may take more time to decide on its next rate move.
The decision-making process will be driven by weighing more data, allowing the Fed to make a better call on interest rates. Jefferson noted that economic output and job market are currently solid, but inflation remains above target with upside risks. He expects inflation pressure to ease over the longer term.
