Fed's Williams: Inflation Will Ease, But Rate Hikes Loom If It Doesn't
New York Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams expressed optimism that inflation pressures will ease gradually. However, he emphasized that if this doesn't happen, the Fed will take action with rate hikes to ensure price pressures return to target.
Williams pointed out that energy prices and trade tariffs may have peaked, allowing disinflationary forces to reassert themselves. He stated that his forecast is for inflation to come down in the second half of this year and further next year.
The current inflation rate stands above 2% and has not been at or below target in over five years. Despite this, Williams believes the interest rate policy is well-positioned to bring inflation back to target.
