Foreign Investors Snap Up Canadian Debt in Record Bond Binge
Foreign investors have shown an insatiable appetite for Canadian bonds in recent months. According to international securities transactions data, non-residents bought $35 billion worth of Canadian debt in June, a record that more than triples the previous high set just last year.
The surge brings the total foreign ownership of Canadian bonds to over $2.5 trillion, up from less than half that amount a decade ago. National Bank of Canada strategists Taylor Schleich and Warren Lovely attribute this trend to Canada's stable politics and sustainable fiscal policy, which make it an attractive alternative to US Treasuries.
However, the strategists also caution that a foreign-heavy investor base has its risks. Canadian bonds are currently in high demand due to their stability and relatively low borrowing costs, but maintaining this situation will be crucial for keeping borrowing costs low.
