Forint Erodes as MNB Rate Cut Guidance Falters

The Hungarian Forint (HUF) has recently given back some of its gains against the Euro (EUR), reversing to above 360. External shocks and an ongoing easing cycle by the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) are eroding support for the currency.

According to Commerzbank's Tatha Ghose, a more conditional stance from the MNB on rate cuts could limit further Forint downside and reinforce foreign exchange stability. The MPC minutes will be crucial in determining this stance.

The MNB had indicated room for additional rate cuts during the summer before reassessing the outlook in September. This guidance has reduced some of the forint's interest rate support, making a more conditional tone necessary to reassure markets.
