Freightways Posts Strong Result Amid Fuel Price Uncertainty
Freightways, a leading New Zealand-based freight and logistics company, has reported a strong financial result for the year ending June. The company's net profit increased to $94 million, up from $80.1 million in the previous year, while revenue reached $1.46 billion, a 13% increase from the same period last year.
The company attributed the positive trend at the start of the financial year to its ability to win new customers and invest in improving its operating platforms and facilities. However, the US-Iran war had a significant impact on Freightways' results, causing fuel prices to rise sharply and consumer demand to slow down.
Freightways noted that higher fuel costs affected the business in two ways: compressing margins due to delayed fuel recovery mechanisms, and reducing discretionary spending across the economy, leading to lower freight volumes. The company also pointed out that the Reserve Bank's tightening of monetary conditions contributed to a softer economic environment.
Despite these challenges, Freightways remains optimistic about its future prospects, stating that it expects same-customer volumes to improve progressively in Australia and New Zealand as fuel prices moderate.
