Fuel Costs and Electronics Drive UK Inflation Upward
UK inflation is expected to have accelerated in August due to higher fuel costs and more expensive electronics. The Office for National Statistics will release the latest Consumer Prices Index (CPI) data on Wednesday, which is forecast to show a 3.1% rate of inflation, up from 2.9% in July.
The increase is attributed to several factors, including higher petrol and diesel prices, which rose 7% month-on-month between July and August, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. This is expected to add around 0.2 percentage points to CPI inflation.
Experts also point to 'AI-flation', with higher electronics prices linked to chip shortages amid the AI boom adding another 0.2 percentage points to inflation.
