Fuel Prices Spark 3.1% UK Inflation Surge
UK inflation rose to 3.1% year-over-year in August, exceeding expectations and moving further away from the Bank of England's 2% target.
The increase was largely driven by higher fuel prices, with petrol prices rising by 9.1 pence per liter between July and August, reaching an average price of 161.3 pence per liter.
According to Richard Carter, an analyst at Quilter Cheviot, the shock from rising petrol and energy prices, as well as higher housing costs, is beginning to have a significant impact on UK economic data.
The Bank of England's room for manoeuvre is limited by this trajectory, with its monetary policy committee due to announce its decision on September 17. Markets are largely expecting the interest rate to remain unchanged at 3.75%, but the latest acceleration in prices complicates any rapid monetary easing.
