GBP/JPY Surges as Positive UK Data Boosts Pound
The British Pound has made significant gains against the Japanese Yen in the early London session on Wednesday, thanks to unexpectedly positive economic data from the UK. The GDP growth rate for the second quarter was revised up to 0.5% from the initial estimate of 0.4%, with a year-on-year reading now at 1.4%. Additionally, the Current Account deficit narrowed to £19.932 billion in Q2, contrary to market expectations of a widening gap.
The data has boosted the Pound's value against the Yen, which had hit a fresh year-to-date low earlier in the session. However, technical analysis suggests that bulls will be challenged at the 208.30 area, where a trendline support meets an intra-day high. The near-term bias remains bearish, with momentum indicators indicating a fragile recovery.
The Pound has a significant support area at 207.00, below which the 127.2% Fibonacci retracement of September's rally, at the 206.00 area, seems like a plausible target.
